Rooted in Connection
Lessons from nature's giants about the importance of building a strong network

In today’s edition, we’re exploring a profound metaphor from Arthur C. Brooks' book, From Strength to Strength, about the critical role that our social networks play in allowing us to thrive…
🎯 The Idea In a Nutshell:
Redwood trees defy the laws of physics.
They can grow to a towering height of over three hundred feet, yet their root systems are extremely shallow — sometimes extending only five or six feet down.
This is possible due to the interconnectedness of their root systems.
Redwoods grow in thick groves where their roots become intertwined creating a support system that allows them to withstand the elements for hundreds of years.
Just as these trees rely on their connections to thrive, so too must we as men and fathers.
📝 Diving Deeper
As fathers and leaders, we’re constantly spread thin. The ceaseless demands on our time make it difficult to maintain the connections that sustain us.
In midlife, the puzzle gets even trickier. Middle age, after all, presents some of the biggest challenges we’ll ever face — Aging parents. Children who test our resolve. Difficult career transitions. Marital challenges. Wrestling with mortality. And so on.
It’s in these moments that we need friends to lean on. But for men, that’s usually not what happens. Instead, constant time pressure causes us to de-prioritize relationship-building at precisely the phase of life when we need it most.
The redwoods provide a powerful reminder: we’re not meant to stand alone.
If we want to thrive, we must find ways to prioritize the work of building and nurturing relationships. These support systems enrich our lives and help us withstand the inevitable challenges we all face.
👉 Why it matters:
Just like the roots of a redwood allow it to grow to astonishing heights, connections are paramount if we want to thrive in the face of life’s challenges.
In midlife, cultivating relationships can provide the support we need when we need it most.
Being busy is no excuse. If we want to build strong networks, we must make it a priority.
🤔 Prompts for Reflection
How can you carve out time to strengthen your connections?
What relationships have you neglected that you could begin to nurture again?
In what ways can you offer more support to others in your network?
